Post-Physical Therapy Regimen

I am not a physical therapist. If you have undiagnosed
joint or back pain please contact me. I will refer you to some
wonderful orthopaedic physicians.

A 'knowledgeable' M.D. should prescribe
physical therapy for most injuries post-treatment.

Once your physical therapist
prescribes a P.T. program for
you to follow on your own, I can help you to stay on track
with your post-physical therapy regimen.

CONSISTENT VARIETY

Employing a variety of exercises on a consistent basis can help stimulate
and balance synergistic muscle-innervation (stabilizing) patterns.
Resistance training (especially with a balance ball or board), cycling,
hiking, yoga, sport bands, etc. are all just part of the formula for
rehabilitative and preventative maintenance.

My youthful skiing life in Vail, CO was full of ups and downs. Fortunately,
my last visit was a safe one with no unexpected turns... or twists.

Exercise is physical therapy if
performed correctly.

The major joints of the body need to be muscularly balanced in order to stay sound and to
endure static, repetitive, and dynamic stresses throughout their 'active ranges of motion.'

When muscles contract to create a movement and/or resist external forces
(momentum, impact, gravity) they also displace stress upon the skeletal system.
There are numerous ways to get in great shape without over-stressing the body.

Deep sand is a great medium
for
non-impact
cardiovascular strengthening

and
joint stabilizing.

If recovering from an injury, please consult with your doctor or
physical therapist before attempting any new exercise program.

INVOLUNTARY EXPERIENCE

I have had first-hand, involuntary experience on the importance
of comprehensive joint-stability training.

While rehabilitating from several skiing injuries (ACL reconstruction,
fractured/dislocated shoulder, etc.) with months of physical therapy, I would
become impatient (note: as a patient you can never have enough patience).
Feeling fine and a little over-confident, I would exert myself during an activity only to
be reminded of my instability with a sharp "twinge" from the various body part.

Injured/recovering joints can be great "teachers" as they are very sensitive to all
movement and pressure. Ironically, healthy joints that have never been injured do not
communicate well. They are typically tough and internally insensitive... until they have a problem;
then, like children, they do not stop complaining. Sometimes they ache for seemingly small reasons.

I am happy to report I have recovered.

MOTION IS POTION

Daily motion is the potion of success.

How do you feel after a long flight? A majority of bodily aches and pains
can be blamed on tight muscles and inactivity. This is also true for a majority
of recovering joints and for just maintaining over all good health. Even most
recovering spines need to be 'properly' stretched on a regular basis.

There is a fine line between over-training and good muscle soreness.
This is especially true when recovering from an injury/chronic problem.
I can help you gain your confidence again. Being careful is the
key to staying re-injury free.

The fear of re-injury keeps many people from being active again:
I definitely understand… I personally know this feeling all too well.

The goal is to find your safe potential. Also important, what is your
long-term goal? Do you want to ski the green circle or the
double-black diamond slope down the mountain of life?
I live for 'philososomatic' metaphors
(yes, I made up that word).
