There is an aspect of spiritual development that most of the serious yoga
practitioners follow. Take what you want from yoga and have no reservations
about encountering the over-zealous. I have always had very positive
experiences with everyone at the studios.

YOGA COMPLIMENTS ATHLETICISM

Yoga Instructor Brad France and I have been on dozens of very
challenging mountain bike rides together. Many grueling afternoons pedaling
up long and steep trails for hours on end. Anyone who knows real mountain
biking understands how arduous it is. Brad rides infrequently but can go the
distance. His extensive hours of yoga have helped him maintain most of the
pedaling stamina, strength, and balance necessary for riding truly BIG
mountains. As far as my yoga is concerned, mountain biking has not
returned the favor.

Please note:
Like any activity, yoga can also be dangerous.
Excessive forward bending and extension can over-stretch the ligaments
of the lower spine. This can lead to lumbar and sacral disc instability
which can create back pain and early on-set arthritis.

When strength training clients and myself, I combine the
basic principles of yoga (balance, posture, lengthening
of the muscles) with traditional gym exercises.

Gravity has no prejudice.

YOGA IS NOT PERFECT

Like most activities, yoga can be injurious to those who push too
hard too often.
I always see the few who take it too far and have developed
numerous unknown imbalances. Like weightlifting, yoga is not a
complete or all-encompassing form of exercise. Though it is probably the
most well-rounded for safely developing and balancing a majority of the
body while engaging the mind. A majority of people find yoga to be
challenging and deeply relaxing.

Note:
It takes practice to relax the mind and body
in both active and passive motion (think golf).

Brad France shows off his 'posterior knowledge'.

Coincidence:
I met Mr. France in 2001 while riding in the Santa Monica Mountains
just north of West LA. We had both stopped to admire the rather large
rattlesnake crossing the road. It turns out we both went to CU-Boulder
and after college we both went 'skiing for a while' before moving to LA.

Unfortunately,
Brad chose Aspen instead

Sorry to the Aspen aficionados, this is not being prejudiced...
it's just the truth!
